Specialization Requirements & Application Procedures

Admission Requirements

Students must register in one of the participating units (i.e. graduate departments, faculties and institutes listed), in order to be eligible for either option of study in the Collaborative Specialization in Aging, Palliative and Supportive Care across the Life Course.

Application Procedures

Graduate students apply for the program by providing:

  1. a brief letter of intent expressing interest in the program;
  2. a resume;
  3. copies of all official transcripts;
  4. a copy of your SGS admissions form; and
  5. for doctoral students only, two letters of reference.

Program Requirements

Students will be required to complete two courses (one core and one elective) for the master’s program and require three courses for the doctoral program, for either of the two options. It is expected that the student’s thesis or practicum (whichever is included in their program of study) be in the area of their chosen option (i.e., either aging and the life course; or palliative and supportive care).

For two participating course work only degree programs, the following requirements apply to new applicants registering for September 2018 and onwards:

  1. Master of Information (coursework only option): 5 half courses (1 core and 4 electives) More Information  

    In addition to meeting the program requirements of their home graduate unit, students must complete:

    • The core course (0.5 full-course equivalent [FCE]) for the chosen option (i.e., aging and the life course or palliative and supportive care).
    • Four elective courses (2.0 FCEs), one of which can be a practicum course, from a) the chosen option’s pre-approved elective list or b) the student’s home graduate unit list of courses and/or graduate-level elective courses, where the topic of the major paper or practicum field is in the area of the chosen specialization (aging or palliative). Courses not on the pre-approved list must be approved by the collaborative specialization director and/or committee, after consultation with the Information faculty member associated with the collaborative specialization and, as needed, the course instructor, to count towards the collaborative specialization requirements.
  2. MEd in Adult Education and Community Development: 3 half courses (1 core and 2 electives) More Information 

    In addition to meeting the program requirements of their home graduate unit, students must complete:

    • The core course (0.5 full-course equivalent [FCE]) for the chosen option (i.e., aging and the life course or palliative and supportive care).
    • Two elective courses (1.0 FCE) from a) the chosen option’s pre-approved elective list or b) the student’s home graduate unit list of courses and/or other graduate-level courses, provided the focus of the student’s assignments is in the area of this specialization (aging or palliative) and the course is approved by the specialization committee as a suitable elective.
